Started in 1986

Hickory Hill Fiber Farm was founded in Petersburg, New York, in the mid-1980s by Pat, who built it from the ground up with real dedication to fiber animals and the craft that comes from them. Pat's vision was simple: raise good animals, produce quality fiber, and share it with people who care about where things come from.

For nearly forty years, this farm has been part of the fabric of Rensselaer County. The pastures, the animals, and the work are the same. The people who stopped by thirty years ago still stop by. New people find their way here too.

The farm today

Today John, Paul and Todd run Hickory Hill. They've kept everything that made the farm worth keeping and built on it. The herd is strong. The animals are well cared for. The fiber is as good as it's ever been.

They're active in the local community and easy to reach. Call, stop by, or find them on Facebook where they post about animals, fiber, and what's happening on the farm.

Petersburg is tucked into the hills of Rensselaer County, not far from Bennington, Vermont, and easy to get to from Pittsfield, Troy, and Albany. The area has a long tradition of agriculture and craft, and Hickory Hill is part of that.

The people behind it

Todd, Paul, and John have been running Hickory Hill for years. Between the three of them, there is not much about fiber animals they have not seen.

Todd Smith at Hickory Hill Fiber Farm

Todd Smith

Todd is the day-to-day heartbeat of the farm. He has been raising fiber animals in Petersburg for decades, and if something needs doing, Todd is usually the one doing it. He also happens to be an enthusiastic drone pilot, which is how we get those aerial shots of the property.

Paul Hastings with a llama at Hickory Hill Fiber Farm

Paul Hastings

Paul studied biology at SUNY Cortland and came to the farm through a genuine love of animals that outlasted everything else. He pays attention to things other people walk past. He is the one who notices when the sunflowers are up and comes back with a bouquet.

John Hart with a llama at Hickory Hill Fiber Farm

John Hart

John names every animal and remembers every birthday. He has been welcoming new additions to the herd and new visitors to the property with equal enthusiasm for years. Call the farm and want to know an animal's story, John is who you want to talk to.
